His failed attempt at suicide prompts his mother to take him to a priest, in the hopes that he may offer solace and salvation to the troubled boy. But, when he learns of Michael’s unnatural conception, the priest finds himself conflicted over the state of the boy’s eternal soul.
The priest offers his analysis - the boy is having "visions of the damned," for he does not have a natural soul, born of a mother and a father.
PRIEST
Are you telling me that this poor boy is some sort of bastard of science!?

At 18, Michael again attempts suicide, this time succeeding. To his horror, Michael awakens in the Hell of his nightmares, the very same hospital from his hallucinations, complete with the doctor and nurse he is sure he has seen before.
He must escape, but cannot move, drugged, on a respirator, and tied to a bed with hundreds of wires which appear to be charging his muscles like batteries.
